U.S. Homes Face Burning Need for Smoke Detectors

Home » Helpful Tips » Tips

Recent national data reveals U.S. fire departments respond to nearly 400,000 house fires each year, with fire injuries occurring every 40 minutes, resulting in roughly eight deaths every day and millions of dollars in property loss.  The best way to protect home and family is through early detection warning devices, yet new research from First Alert, a national leader in fire protection products, found 66% of households are not in compliance with the national recommendation for numbers of smoke detectors. That equates to nearly 2,000 Aspen homes and just over 1.4 million homes across Colorado inadequately equipped.   In addition, the same study found 90% of homes were inadequately protected against carbon monoxide dangers, including 40% not having a single working detector.

In an effort to enlighten consumers, October 3 - 10 is designated as National Fire Protection Week: seven days dedicated to educating consumers on the importance of protecting their families and homes from the dangers of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Early October is the perfect time to assess your home’s overall fire safety and the recommendations include;

    * Make sure you have the recommended number of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home or apartment. Current NFPA recommendations are at least one carbon monoxide alarm on each level and one in or near every bedroom. Smoke alarms should be located on every floor, including the basement, at the top of every staircase and in every bedroom.
    * Annually replace the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and test to make sure they’re all working. Replace smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every 10 years.
    * Place escape ladders in second story bedrooms.
    * Cooking is the number one cause of home fires and injuries. Place a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
    * Discuss fire safety –including location of fire extinguishers and escape plans – with every member of the family.

In an effort to bring awareness to the importance of National Fire Protection Week, as well as helping to protect the community, Alpine Ace Hardware will be giving away 9-volt batteries all week long, October 3 – October 10.  To take advantage of the free battery offer, consumers simply need to bring their old battery into the store and exchange it for a new one. No purchase necessary, offer good while supplies last and one per-person.
