Recycling in Aspen

Recycling in Aspen/ Pitkin County

The Pitkin County recycling collection program is a 4 bin system  which means that all recyclable materials, such as office paper,  co-mingled containers, cardboard, and newspaper/magazines must be separated into 4 different bins for pick up. The materials are then sent to Pitkin County Resource Recovery  located at the Pitkin County Landfill, where they are bailed and sold to manufacturers that turn our discards into new products.

Bring your CFL light bulbs, rechargeable batteries, old cell phones, old christmas lights and thermostats containing mercury to Alpine Ace Hardware we will recycle them for free!! These items contain lead and need to be properly disposed of.

The recycling programs are available for single family residents, multi family residents, businesses, and city/county government.

Recycling for other items such as plastic bags, phone books, electronic waste, hazardous waste, and compost is also available.

This includes anything that has a plug or uses batteries (computers, printers, keyboards, monitors televisions, stereos, microwaves, faxes, VCRs, cell phones, etc.). These items can contain large amounts of lead and other heavy metals, and should not be put in the landfill where they will leak and possibly contaminate the watershed.

Electronics should be recycled at the Pikin County Resource Recovery Center (landfill) for a small fee. Or, if you don't mind holding on to your items, the Environmental Health Department hosts an electronic recycling event in Aspen every year right around spring clean up time.

Recycling Computers

To properly dispose of grass and leaves:

    * Take them to the landfill for free. (They will be composted.)

    * Residents may drop their own off in the seasonal collection bin for grass and leaves at the Rio Grande Recycle Center. This bin is NOT for commercial landscaper use. Commercial landscapers are not permitted to use this bin even if the material comes from a residence (commercial landscapers must use the landfill). Only residents may drop off their own grass and leaves.

    * Compost your grass and leaves in your yard.
